BEIJING (Reuters) - China reported its first outbreak of the deadly African swine fever (ASF) on Last Friday, as authorities in Liaoning province in the country’s northeast culled almost 1,000 hogs and rushed to control the highly contagious disease.
African Swine Fever (ASF) is a highly contagious, generalized disease of pigs caused by an Iridovirus of family Asfarviridae that exhibits varying virulence between strains and is very hardy to physical and chemical inactivation. No vaccine exists to combat this virus. It does not affect humans nor does it affect other animal species other than pigs and wild boars. The clinical manifestations are fever, skin cyanosis, lymph nodes, kidney and gastrointestinal mucosa bleeding significantly. Mortality is usually close to 100 percent and pigs of all ages are affected.
Figure 1 The infection pathway of ASF.
Figure 1 showed that ASF can be transmitted by direct contact with infected pig and boar, contaminated materials and livestock transport trucks, feeding contaminated food, soft tick.
Soft tick which is the main in vitro blood-sucking parasite in swine is the main biological vector of African Swine Fever(ASF). Therefore, control soft tick can be one of the effective control measure of African Swine Fever.
